A very interesting article was published in the New York Times (Sept 8, 2020) dealing with the history "Freedmen" (slaves owned by various Tribal Nations who were given freedom through the succession of the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation and the 1866 Treaty) and such relevance to their descendants, the pursuit of Tribal citizenship and the most recent Supreme Court decision in McGirt v. Oklahoma.
There are close synergies in timing and geography between what the article covers and Martha Parker's life and history. Highlights of this were covered our Sept 26th family zoom call and can be found in the presentation (click here).
